A Saint Joseph School eighth-grader who aspires to work in education or health care got a taste of government when she served Oct. 2 as an honorary Berkeley County commissioner.

Lorelei Oligmueller, 13, of Summit Point, was sworn in by Commissioner John Hardy and sat among the four commissioners present, the county administrator and the county office administrator. The local government leaders went over bond reductions and releases and shared a few reports from boards on which they are members. They listened to an estate hearing and were presented with an overview of the commission’s financial statements.

On a lighter note, Commission President Eddie Gochenour noted that trick-or-treating in the county and the City of Martinsburg is taking place on Oct. 31. And Vice President Steve Catlett shared that Hedgesville High School graduate Chase DeLauter made his Major League Baseball debut earlier in the week for the Cleveland Guardians.

“For a local kid to make it at that level is a big deal,” Catlett said, adding that our area has bred several professional athletes.

For her moment in the spotlight, Oligmueller told those assembled that she is the oldest of six children, four of whom also attend Saint Joseph School. She plays soccer for the Crusaders and is a member of its show choir, Genesis.

“When I grow up, I want to be either a nurse or a teacher,” she said.
