Eighth-grader Shaan Sood left the Oct. 9 meeting he attended as an honorary Berkeley County commissioner with a desire to take on his gym teacher in a game of one-on-one.

Sood, 13, of Falling Waters, plays basketball for Saint Joseph School. He was asked by Commission President Eddie Gochenour if he thought he could beat his gym teacher – Gochenour’s daughter-in-law, Meghan Gochenour – in basketball. Sood gave a subtle nod of “yes,” but later admitted he had never challenged her to a game, so one might have to be played soon to see if his guess is accurate.

“I’m just blessed to be here right now,” Sood said after being sworn in by Commissioner John Hardy. He told the four commissioners present, the county administrator, county office administrator and those sitting in the audience that he plans to attend Spring Mills High School, then pursue law studies at Shepherd University or West Virginia University.

Asked why he didn’t want to go into medicine like his parents, Sood was quick to say, “I don’t like blood.”
