Feb. 3 marks the fifth anniversary of Dan Maerten’s death.
Dan was a beloved member of the Saint Joseph School community. He sang in the choir; was involved with the parish council at Saint Joseph Catholic Church and the Boy Scouts; and many other things.
When he died, the SJS cross-country team started The Maerten Award as a living memorial to him and his family.
Recipients exhibit Christian values, high-spirited fun and teamwork. The coaches present candidates to the Maerten family for consideration, and they choose to whom the award is given.
This year’s recipient is sixth-grader Jessica Monroe. She has an incredibly positive attitude and diligent work ethic. She always brings a smile to practice and helps elevate her team.
She is pictured here with, from left, coach Colleen Farrell; Patti Maerten, wife of Dan; and coach Dr. Ryan McCarthy at the banquet held at the end of the cross-country season.
It is a joy to keep Dan’s memory alive through this award.
