A Saint Joseph School student-athlete learned the ins and outs of local government while participating in the March 26 meeting of the Berkeley County Commission as an honorary member.

Chase Domenico, 14, of Inwood, has a fascination with scientific inquiry and plans to attend West Virginia University for his undergraduate studies, as have all three of his older siblings. He has played in the Saint Joseph School handbell choir throughout middle school.

Domenico has also played basketball on the Crusaders’ team since sixth grade. He told the commissioners that one of his proudest moments was winning the basketball championship his first year on the team.

Commission Vice President Steve Catlett, who knows the school’s athletic director/basketball coach Vic Lupis, asked Domenico how he liked playing for a good, but tough coach. Domenico said he believed that “tough times make you stronger” and Lupis has always “pushed (him) through” to achieve success on the other side.

Many issues were discussed during the meeting, including a new data center in the county, new safety requirements for businesses handling food and a proclamation recognizing a community member for his years of service to the county. Following the meeting, Domenico expressed his admiration for the work the commissioners do and said the meeting taught him how decision-making happens at the local level.
