Four eighth-graders from Saint Joseph School were among 11 Berkeley County students named Golden Horseshoe Award winners for 2023.
Jackson Allen, Tran Dinh, Freyja Dreflak and Karissa Sood were honored by the West Virginia Department of Education as knights of the Golden Horseshoe Society for demonstrating exceptional knowledge of West Virginia history on the state-administered exam.
This year, 226 winners will join the ranks of West Virginia citizens who have won the prestigious award. They have an opportunity to be recognized at the Golden Horseshoe ceremony on June 13 at the West Virginia Culture Center in Charleston, W.Va.
Since 2012, 31 students from Saint Joseph School have won the award. From 2016-23, SJS eighth-graders comprised 35% of all Berkeley County winners.
